Exceptional Education
A variety of exceptional education programs are at Kaley. The largest is the Hearing Impaired Program. This Auditory/Oral program serves students from PRE K through 5.
Hearing Impaired
The Hearing Impaired Program at Kaley serves deaf & hard of hearing students in Orange or Lake County, Florida. We use the auditory/oral method.....we train the children to use appropriate amplification (hearing aids or cochlear implant) to maximize their ability to listen and comprehend. Our goal is for these students to mainstream in academic and social activities with their hearing peers. Our program serves students from 3 to 11 years of age. We have several options available to them. There are currently 7 self-contained classrooms taught by certified teachers of the Hearing Impaired. These include 2 Pre-K classrooms for our youngest students. The preschool emphasis is on auditory training and language experiences for the children to increase their vocabulary base. The academic classes, K-Grade 5, work to provide the necessary language and comprehension for skills needed to learn in the areas of Language, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Other options include partial mainstreaming into the regular classroom with supplemental help from a self-contained classroom teacher, or full-time mainstreaming in a regular ed. classroom with 1-5 hours a week working with a resource teacher of the Hearing Impaired.

Kaley Elementary School was constructed of Depression bricks in 1935 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers. The outer beauty of the school lies in its old English style of architecture. In 1995 our school was proclaimed a historical site by the Orlando Preservation Board & the City of Orlando. Our inner beauty is created by a unique population of students in the regular K through 5th Grade Program, PreK through 5th Grade Auditory-Oral Hearing Impaired Program, the Educable Mentally Handicapped Program, the PreK Exceptional Education Program, and the PreK Varying Exceptionalities Program. Kaley is also the location for the district’s Audiology Department. |
